What is PCIT and how it helps with parenting and attachment
Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is one of the most thoroughly researched treatments for young children who struggle with behavioral challenges such as tantrums, defiance, and aggression. More than 40 years of research show that PCIT not only improves children’s behavior but also strengthens the relationship between parents and their children.
Rather than simply telling parents what to do, PCIT therapists coach parents in real time while they interact with their child. This live coaching helps parents learn skills more quickly, build stronger parenting strategies, and create lasting positive changes at home, at school, and in social settings.
Research has shown that families who complete PCIT often see a significant reduction in disruptive behaviors, an increase in positive behaviors, and decreased stress for parents. Importantly, these improvements tend to continue even after therapy has ended. Many families report that the skills they learned during PCIT continue to benefit them years later.
PCIT has also been shown to be effective with children from a wide range of backgrounds, including families involved in foster care, those who have experienced trauma, and families from diverse cultural communities.
